Can make NFS mounts, ftp mounts, gnutella mounts anywhere
Work with files as though they are local
Loopback devices
Shadowfs

But, we have this already
Automounters
Bash extensions
/dev/tcp/IP/PORT
/dev/udp/IP/PORT
Gnome's VFS

No, we do not
Every application must implement the same protocol
Often a question of security

Conclusion
Put it where it belongs: the system's VFS
